Note: Yes I know this technically isn’t animated, but I really wanna talk about this episode. I like the Big Bang Theory, I find it funny and charming, but I also know that its painfully flawed.
One such flaw is episodes like this. This is nothing short of a half assed attempt to make Penny and Bernadette (and by extension the audience) sympathise for Amy Farah Fowler with any character growth or development.. Now let me say that as of now Amy Farah Fowler was one of my favourite characters in the show, but at the time of this episodes release it seemed that putting her in the show was a terrible mistake.
She was annoying, inconsistently written and was pretty much Sheldon without his charm. And this episode did not help her character in anyway. In this episode, after her friends Penny and Bernadette go dress shopping without her, she falls into a depression.
I would just like to point out that just the night before that she was suggesting using the dresses of dead people. I’m not even joking, she legitimately suggested doing that and even showed them pictures. (Of the dead people, not just the dresses.)
This wasn’t just a one time thing, she’s repeatedly made inappropriate comments in nearly every episode and pestered them about the wedding. And thats where the episode falls flat on its face; Amy is put in the right for acting inappropriately and the whole episode pretty much says that Penny and Bernadette just have to put with her and they are horrible people for wanting a peaceful time dress shopping without someone suggesting they wash each other.
It was also made clear that this was just a one time thing and that they still are friends with Amy, but instead of being mature and just accepting it, she spends the rest of the episode depressed, drunk and whinny, it almost feels like she’s trying to guilt trip them into apologising. If they had been doing this for a week then I could feel more sympathy for Amy
And by the end we’re treated to the sight of Amy dress shopping with the girls and proving that this experience has taught her absolutely NOTHING. She does all the stuff that they were bother by including offhandedly insulting Bernadette, you know THE BRIDE THAT THEY WERE DRESS SHOPPING FOR! Thats right, after all this it never once occurred to Amy that maybe she needs to change, or maybe she made some mistake that they she needed to fix.
